The 27 Club, A Look At Some Of Music’s Top Artist Gone At 27

With the death of Amy Winehouse, that puts us at nine artist who all have died at the age of 27. Here is a list of some you may know:

Amy Winehouse 9/14/83-7/23/11

Amy hit the scene in 2003 and then three years later was back with Back to Black and released the single “Rehab”. Amy had sold millions of albums and won awards. Her single “You Know Im No Good” can be heard as the theme on Showtimes hit series “The Secret Diary of a Call Girl”. Amy had been plagued with substance abuse and eating disorders. In May 2011, on the advice of her father, she checked into rehab. Two months later on July 23rd, police found her dead in her London home.

 Kurt Corbain 2/20/67-4/5/94

Maybe you remember, maybe you dont. Depending on your age. Kurt Cobain was the lead singer of the group Nirvana. Nirvana was and still is one of the most influential groups. Rocking the 90’s to it’s core. Kurt had been struggling with depression much of his life and two months after turning 27, he ended his life with a gunshot to the head.

Jim Morrison 12/8/43-7/3/71

Jim founded the group The Doors in 1965. The Doors racked up 7 Top 40 Singles and had at least 10 albums. Jim left The Doors after making “L.A Woman” in 1971. He moved to Paris to write poetry before being found dead in his apartment. No autopsy was done, so no one from The Doors saw his body , rumors that Jim faked his death to go back to a “normal” life circulated. Nevertheless, his grave is the most visited, gifted and famed in the cemetery.

Janis Joplin 1/19/43-10/4/70

I think we all know who Janis Joplin is. You can hear her songs attempting to be sung on the auditions of American Idol. Born in Texas, Janis came to fame in 1967 with her San Fran based band Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her signature songs includes a Mama Thornton cover of “Ball and Chain” and the original “Piece of My Heart.” While in the midst of recording her second solo “Pearl” Janis was found dead in a hotel, from a heroin overdose. “Pearl” was released and hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and in 1995 Janis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

Jimi Hendrix 11/27/42-9/18/70

Who played a guitar better then this man Jimi Hendrix? No one. Jimi took electric guitar playing to another level. His playing was legendary. Unfortunately, Jimi’s life was cut short when he accidentally overdosed on sleeping pills which caused him to asphyxiate on his own vomit at his girlfriends house.

These were just a few of the influential musicians that have passed at the young age of 27. Gone too soon, but they will never be forgotten. For their music will live on forever.
